Property fraud is one of Nigeria's most common scams. We built OgaLanLord to fight it, but knowing how to protect yourself is just as important.
Follow these rules every time you rent, buy, or deal with a property in Nigeria.
Always inspect before paying
Never pay rent, caution fee, or any money before physically visiting and verifying the property. A genuine landlord or agent will always welcome an in-person inspection.
Use our verified listings
Every listing on OgaLanLord goes through a video verification call. Look for the "Verified" badge. If a property is not verified, treat it with extra caution.
Insist on a proper tenancy agreement
Before making any payment, ensure a written tenancy agreement is prepared. Read it carefully or have a lawyer review it. Do not sign blank documents.
Be cautious of deals that seem too good
If a price is dramatically below market rate, it is likely a scam. Fraudsters use very low prices to attract desperate seekers. Research typical prices in your target area.
Verify the landlord's identity
Ask to see the property's Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) or statutory right of occupancy. Ask for the landlord's ID. A genuine owner will have no problem showing these.
Meet in person or via video call
Refuse to deal with anyone who insists on only communicating via text/WhatsApp and refuses a phone or video call. Ghost landlords are real. Always speak to someone directly.
If you encounter any of these, stop all communication and report to us.
Video verification on every listing
Our team speaks to every landlord and confirms every address before a listing goes live.
Verified badge system
Listings that pass verification receive a visible badge so you know which properties have been confirmed.
In-app messaging
Use our built-in messaging instead of sharing personal WhatsApp numbers. Keeps communication safe and on record.
Report & investigate
Every listing has a "Report" button. Our team investigates all reports within 24 hours and removes suspicious listings.
If you've encountered a suspicious listing, been asked to pay irregularly, or believe you are being scammed, contact us immediately.
